Feeling part of the world
Abstract
I notice that sound which cannot be immediately traced to its source poses a challenge for some listeners—causing a slight sense of disorientation or uncertainty. This happens particularly with synthetic or electronic sound; yet, if we wish to dream through music again, we must begin to change and evolve our sensibility toward the unknown—toward that uncertainty which, through its sonic transformations, might lead us to who-knows-where. Only in this way can we come to appreciate and enjoy a music that embraces the world and beyond. The great difference between music *to be listened to* and music *for listening* is that, in the former case, one stands outside the music (it flows independently of us), whereas in the latter, one is immersed in a complex situation alongside everything else that is happening; the "music" emerges from the interaction and relationships with what exists—meaning one does not listen with the ear alone, but senses it with the entire body.Downloads
